How the Biblical Canon Took Shape
The Muratorian Fragment is an early list. Its date is debated. Origen and Eusebius also separated accepted from disputed books. Athanasius’ letter of 367 is the first surviving list with today’s twenty-seven books. Hippo and Carthage later affirmed it. Nicaea did not decide the canon.
Old Testament lists still differ. Protestants use the shorter Hebrew collection. Catholics include deuterocanonical books. Orthodox lists are often broader. This shows early agreement. It also shows that major Christian traditions do not have one identical Bible.

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Quran
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

What the New Testament Says About Itself
2 Peter 3:15–16 places Paul’s letters beside “the other Scriptures.” This shows early recognition of Paul. Yet 2 Peter itself remained disputed in some churches. The passage therefore shows recognition and an unresolved canon question.

argument
One Generation Versus Several Centuries
The New Testament is a library. It has works by different authors. They were written across decades. Churches in different regions assessed them. Most books were accepted early. The exact twenty-seven-book list took longer. Christian Old Testament lists still differ. This does not mean councils invented Christianity. It means Islam has an early, closed scripture. Christianity recognized a library over centuries.

Common Misconceptions
“All Christians read the same Bible.” No. Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Bibles differ in Old Testament contents.
“Disputed books like 2 Peter make the whole New Testament unreliable.” Most books were accepted early and widely. Some were debated longer. This is not total uncertainty about the collection.

The Islamic Conclusion
The Bible preserves important ancient testimony. Most New Testament books gained early support. Its canon still depended on later church recognition. Major churches differ over part of it. For someone seeking protected revelation, the Quran’s early, single-book canon is a strong sign.

notes
Frequently Asked Questions
A: Not from scratch. Hippo and Carthage recorded books already used widely.
Q: Why do Christian Bibles have different numbers of books?
A: Their Old Testament lists differ. Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox lists are not identical.
Q: When was the twenty-seven-book list fixed?
A: Most books were accepted earlier. The first surviving exact list is Athanasius’ letter of 367.
Q: Does the Quran have a similar history?
A: No enduring alternative Quranic canon emerged. Uthman’s standard copies established the same 114 surahs shared by Sunni and Shia Muslims.
Q: Does 2 Timothy 3:16 list Scripture?
A: No. It describes Scripture as God-breathed. It gives no table of contents.
